(Where There’s A Will There’s An Heir?)

By Yaakov (Jim) Schwartz, author Judaism On Purpose™

When the game is over, the king and the pawn go in the same box

In the end, all we take with us is character. And while we may leave a legacy denominated in dollars etc, in the past, Jewish parents and grandparents would leave a legacy to their children and grandchildren called an ethical will (Tzava’ot).

The parent/grandparent’s ethical will would delineate what they wish to pass down in relative to: what they have learned, their values, what they found meaningful, and the wisdom they accumulated (often thru the school of hard knocks)

Assuming the prerequisite completion of the optional Judaism On Purpose™ Remember Me/Soul Resume session whereby values have been clarified and there is a mission statement (what it is and what it is not), the member and Concierge of Meaning© Rabbi/Cantor would forge together an ethical will that will include but not limited to one’s

  • philosophy.
  • values held dear.
  • defining life moments .
  • a lifeline highlights and low points.
  • lessons learned, key events in one’s life & their impact.
  • heroes and villains.
  • best compliments received.
  • those to be thank & why they should be acknowledged
  • aims during life and the legacy wished to endure.

It is hoped that the exercise of ethical will would be updated annually as this author has done for past 20+ years
