(During Torah Portion Noah – The Lumber Liquidator)

By Yaakov (Jim) Schwartz, author Judaism On Purpose™

In the world to come, the wolf will spin silk and the dog will open gates

Ecclesiastes, Rabbah 1

Years ago when pricing a potential pet health insurance product with then the only certified pet actuary in the English speaking world, who, for 20 years had insured over 200,000 dogs and cats annually, when considering geographic factors in setting premiums, off the cuff being a wiseguy, I asked her about the impact of religion ownership/guardianship – on pricing. She, being Jewish herself, remarked, ‘if we could price by religion, there would be a 200%-300% surcharge on Jews in London ‘they so coddle they dogs.’

We Jews love our dogs.

The snarling sentries (dogs) became the silent sentinels (not a dog shall snarl) as Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt

Exodus 11:7

And so, once a year, in conjunction with or as part of a synagogue with Jews of Meaning groups, during Torah portion Noah – A Muzzle Tov Service which also features in particular a contest: Why My Dog Is Jewish for three different age groups in Jewish Day Schools.

What does this have to do with ‘meaning?’

Ideally, the essay indicate the  Jewish values being transferred, and subject to discussion between student and parents, this may actually inure to the parents benefit – like myself having learned from these chavereim (friends) of the soul.

Other than High Holidays (assuming Covid restrictions lifted) my bet this service will be the best or one of the best attended services – ‘a howling success.’
